June Crop Mob at Waller Garlic Farm

Over the past five years Mr. Earl Waller Sr. has been farming an heirloom creole garlic in Twiggs County Georgia. He spent years saving his seed and growing them out to build up the seed stock for his garlic farm. This year over 300,000 heads are maturing in the ground of this rare garlic type, and this year was to be his unveiling of the harvest, finally making it available at market. Mr. Waller grew naturally, without chemical pesticides or herbicides, and worked closely with Georgia Grown, UGA Extension, and the NRCS to build his farm and business to it’s current capacity.

Tragically and suddenly, Mr. Waller passed away several weeks ago at the age of 78. He was a kind and generous man, accomplished in his life, and very passionate about garlic. His beautiful garlic crop now sits orphaned in the ground only weeks away from it’s harvest time. In honor and remembrance Mr Waller’s dream, and to make his garlic crop the success it otherwise would be, we need your help!

We need as many hands as we can get (and pitchforks!) to help get this garlic out of the ground and set-up to cure. With enough people we can get the crop safely out of the ground so it can be cured and shelf-stable, giving the family some time to find markets for it. Garlic is very delicate and sensitive during this pre-harvest stage, and this is a true crop emergency! With a community effort, we can not only save this crop but preserve the future seed security of this creole type garlic. The variety is rare, and Mr Waller’s seed saving efforts have acclimatized this garlic to our hot Georgia climate and red clay soils- traits very desirable for other farmers to continue to grow for the future. We hope to make some of the cured garlic seed available to farmers as “Mr Waller’s Twiggs County Creole” so that the many passionate years spent cultivating it shall not be in vain.

Come out to help with the biggest garlic harvest around!
